Having worked for Denbighshire social services for very many years, I was more than aware of the level of deprivation throughout the area. It is very easy to condemn people; after all we do have a welfare state and are certainly not a poor country. We do not see children ragged, shoeless and pot bellied hanging around the streets, no our poverty is far better disguised. Whether we like to admit it or not there is provable poverty and malnutrition here on our own doorstep. Despite the year being 2005 in some instances you could be forgiven for thinking it was possibly still the 1930's when during the war years there was a great depression. All this aside, poverty today is relative and rarely visible. It is only when you are either working with families facing difficult circumstances, or you are a family affected by these circumstances, can you truly appreciate the impact that this might have on the family and especially the children.
