Get to Know North Wales: Visit Colwyn Bay
IMAGE

Colwyn Bay is a seaside town and community in Conwy County, North Wales. The town has been attracting visitors ever since the Victorian times, yet it’s not afraid to stay current. In recent years, Colwyn Bay has seen the development of the seafront, the construction of a whole new beach, new modern buildings in the town, and is now in the process of a new pier in replacement of the old Victorian structure.

A little history…

Before the late 19th Century, Colwyn Bay was a land full of fields and woods with a few farms and cottages here and there, owned by the Pwllycrochan Estate. Pwllycrochan woods is still up in Colwyn Heights, but the rest of the town has developed. The estate sold off the land for building plots, and Colwyn Bay’s population began to grow. Colwyn Bay is now a pleasant town with a great selection of shops, homes and apartments north wales

The Seafront

The promenade and beach in Colwyn Bay had huge renovations made, completely transforming the waterfront. This created a more modern, sustainable and attractive public area for the town whilst providing an opportunity to upgrade the sea defences. This has all been done representing the town’s past, whilst also creating a vision for the future.

Following this, was the demolition of the old Victorian pier. This was built in 1900 and originally was home to a 2,500 seat auditorium. However, it faced many problems from the get-go, being completely destroyed by fires in both 1910 and 1930. In 2017 the abandoned structure began collapsing into the sea.

This year, work started on the replacement. This is being built using salvaged elements to include some history in the new structure - when this is finished (planned for 2021) the whole of Colwyn Bay’s beach will once again be open.

Parc Eirias

Parc Eirias, including Stadiwm Zip World, is Conwy’s premier sporting location - with over fifty acres of lush parkland. Stadiwm Zip World is the home ground of the Principality Premiership team RGC 1404. The stadium was predominantly used for sporting events, and for the neighbouring school’s events, but in 2011, and can now host international televised events too.

Next year already has some exciting line ups for the Stadium, with none other than Olly Murs heading to the stage on August 13th. Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra will be performing the Ibiza classics with a brand new show the very next day. There will also be some special guests alongside this, to be announced in the near future.
